Alhaji Mashud Mohammed is a commercial farmer who in December 2021 was adjudged the National Best Farmer. He produces rice, soybean, cowpea and maize. Alhaji Mashud is also into poultry production. He is into value addition for the crop and livestock production and has quite a number of storage facilities for Agricultural produce.
On 6th April, 2022, Alhaji Mashud picked up a cheque of GHS 600,000.00 from the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) in an award ceremony held at the forecourt of The Ministry Of Food And Agriculture Ghana (MoFA). He will invest the cash prize into broiler production. He indicated that Ghana imports about 90% of poultry. As such, it is an area worth investing to cut down on foreign poultry import and consumption. Also, he called for more women and youth participation in the industry to improve their standard of living, grow the poultry sector and the country. He explained that he intends to engage about 30 outgrowers, predominantly women and youth in broiler production.
According to Alhaji Mashud, he has experienced a maximum increase in production under the government flagship programme Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ). In comparing his performance pre and post PFJ, he has expanded production from less than 100acres to over 10,000 acres of farmlands. PFJ has increased access to subsidized seeds and fertilizers. Previously, mechanization services were limited but PFJ has made available machinery to make Agriculture efficient and effective. Alhaji Mashud appealed to the government to invest more resources in the programme for more farmers to enjoy its benefits.
