The Human Resource Division in collaboration with the Guidance and Counselling Unit has organized a workshop for academic counsellors of the Faculty of Science Education on October 4, 2016 at the Faculty of Science Block, South Campus.
The workshop which was facilitated by Mrs. Christina Ammah was aimed at equipping all academic counsellors of U.E.W to enhance their counseling skills to help teachers and counsellors communicate well with students and help them to solve their issues. She noted that students consult academic counsellors with wide range of issues such as academic, social, mental, financial and medical amongst others and therefore counselors should be equipped to help students deal with issues from a psychological, social and academic dimensions.
The facilitator enumerated some qualities an effective counsellor should possess such as be a respecter of all persons, self-discipline, non-judgmental, caring and empowerment, good listener, confidential, patient, culturally sensitive and above all build the self-esteem of the student. The highly interactive workshop saw lecturers in a role play with some taking the role of a counsellor and some student’s with complaints. They acted these scenes out and discussed the actions of the counsellors towards the issues the students brought before them.
The Dean of Faculty of Science, Assoc. Prof. Samuel Asiedu-Addo chaired the workshop. Other dignitaries present were the Dean of Student Affairs – Prof. C.W.K. Mereku, Ag. Counselling Director – Dr. Bedu Addo, Lecturers and Academic Counsellors of the faculty. The workshop was coordinated by Mr. Isaac Darkoh, Staff Training and Development Unit, Division of Human Resource.
