UTAG Strike: “Conditions of Service are non-negotiable” SRC President Bernasco directs government

Peter Henry Bernasco – SRC President

The government has been reminded of its obligation to heed to the agreements between it and labour as more labour unions have hinted of their intentions to lay down their tools, an action that has already eaten deep into the educational sector.

University students across the 15 public universities, continue to register their frustration at the inability of their lecturers to return to the lecture halls even though the National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the University Teachers Association (UTAG) to call of its strike following a crunch meeting last week.

In an interview with Rejoice Media, President of the Student Representative Council (SRC) in the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), Peter Henry Bernasco, said government must meet the demands of the lecturers to enable smooth running of academic activities.

Sharing in the plight of the students who are left with no information as to when academic activities begin, Mr. Bernasco intimated that, agreements such as the condition of service of employees are binding and must not be a bone of contention.

“We are not going to go into the nuances and the politics about it [strike]. All we, the students, care about is our lecturers coming back to take us through the academic year.”

“So we plead with the government that they should ensure that all concerns are met. These are conditions of service, they are non-negotiable” the SRC President stressed.

According to him, “It is to ensure that they [lecturers] have a comfortable life so as to pass on the knowledge that they need to pass on, to develop our future leaders.”

Mr. Bernasco meanwhile called on both fresh men and women and the continuing students to remain calm and engage in productive activities since UTAG and the government of Ghana are in close contact, trying as much as possible to solve the impasse.

The SRC President also reveal that plans are in the offing to create more access point on campus which will guarantee constant and reliable internet services.
